The official establishment of the province of North Sulawesi is celebrated with cultural performances and fashion shows in Manado and in the smaller towns and villages. Horse and bull races are usually held in Manado. For the youth there is a contest to select "Noni and Nyong Sulut" (Miss and Mr. North Sulawesi).

Bull and Buffalo Races

Jakarta Fair 2006

The annual Jakarta Fair is held to celebrate the anniversary of the city of Jakarta. The event features entertainment and the promotion of products from around the nation. The provincial government sets up pavilions in the fairground area.

Starting from June 15th - July 16th 2006, the event will take place at Kemayoran Fair Ground, Jakarta.

Sekaten Ceremony

April 14
Alun-Alun Utara Kraton, Jogjakarta


Held during weeks preceding the commemoration of the prophet Muhammad’s birthday, sekaten begins at midnight. Two sets of ancient and sacred gamelan percussion instruments are brought in procession from western side of the palace square to mark the beginning of this ceremony. During the whole week save from Thursday night and Friday mornings, the two sets of gamelan are played continuously night and day. Accompanied by a fair at the square in front of the mosque where local handicrafts and items of folk arts are sold, sekaten ends when the two sets of gamelan are brought back again in procession, to the Kraton.

Sekaten Fair

April
Surakarta/Solo, Central Java


Sekaten Fair This traditional fair is held annually coinciding with the Islamic month of Rabiul Awal or Maulud (Javanese calendar) to commemorate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. This fair takes place at Alun-Alun Utara (The Kasunanan Palace’s North Square) and is open for visitors day and night. Exhibiting lots of tourist attractions, such as traditional food, handicrafts, unique toys, etc. The opening ceremony is marked with the procession of the Royal Family to carry the two huge sets of sacred Gamelans from the Sunan Palace to the great mosque at the north square. Sekaten fair is concluded with “Grebeg Maulud”.

Bumi Khatulistiwa Cultural Festival

March 21-23
Pontianak, West Kalimantan

Held twice a year to commemorate the natural phenomenon of the city Pontianak which lies right on the imaginary Equator line. Featuring traditional West Kalimantan art, tourism and cultural exhibition, also traditional sport competition. Equator young men and lady contest, also seminars, will be held, thus attracting the young and old alike.

The Pitcher’s Filling Ceremony



February 17 - Imogiri, Bantul Regency, Jogjakarta
Held once a year on the Javanese month of Suro, by filling four pitchers made of copper. They are Kyai Mendung (from Rome), Kyai Siem (from Myanmar), Kyai Danumoyo (from Aceh) and Kyai Danumurti (from Palembang). The pitchers are put in front of the procession. The people of Imogiri believe that the water could bring good fortune. This event is held in Imogiri royal cemetery at 10 am.

Gathering “Tourism Funday”

February 15, 2006 - Anyer, Banten
This yearly event is organized by the local government. A week long festival will be highlighted by cultural performances, exhibition of handicraft products and various sport/traditional contests.

Hondodento Sea Offering

February 14 - Parangtritis Beach, Bantul, Jogjakarta
This ritual is held by the big family of Hondodenito to ask God for national safety in Parang Kusumo, Parangtritis, Bantul, Jogjakarta.

Sea Offering Ceremony

February 7 - Cilacap Regency, Central Java

This is a traditional event which is annually held by fishing community in Sidakaya, Donan, Sentolo, Jawat, Lengkong and Tegal. This event is marked by drifting the offering offshore Karang Bandung village in Southern Nusakambangan island. The climax of this event is when the offerings (“Jolen”) are brought in a procession starting from the Cilacap Regent’s Residence to Pandanarang at the beach of Teluk Penyu. To liven to event, various art performances are held, joining the procession. The “Jolen” are transferred to colorfully decorated boat followed in its wake by many others, to be drifted offshore to Hindian Ocean at a small island of Majeti. This ceremony ends in the evening, with traditional art performances held in the fishing village.

Bau Nyale Putri Mandalika

Once a year, usually during the night of the full moon in February or March, for one or two days, “Nyale”—the local word for sea worms, cluster in Kuta Beach, the coast of Lombok. After performing sacred rituals and collecting nyale, the locals will indulge themselves in merrymaking all night long. Considered to be a delicacy by the locals, nyale is also a symbol of abundance and love. There is a legend involved with the appearance of these colorful seaworms. It is said that in the past, a beautiful princess called Mandalika was willing to sacrifice herself by jumping to the sea. Before that she promised that she’d return once a year in the form of nyale.

This traditional ceremony commemorates the struggle of Muslim community, especially the grandchildren of Prophet Muhammad, Hasan and Husein, in defending and preserving the religion. Highlights during the festival include various kinds of contests and handicrafts exhibitions.

The Ceremony of “Numplak Wajik”

January 7 - Jogjakarta
A ceremony preparing the Gunungan (cone-shaped) “wajik”, made of sticky rice cooked with sugar and coconut cream. Gunungan Wajik is prepared in the Magangan hall at the Kraton courtyard. The moment the Wajik is turned over on the big round wooden tray (the base of the gunungan), people simultaneously beat rice mortars rhythmically in regular cadence marks the completion of gunungan. The ceremony starts at 3 pm.
